During the first month of 2023, for every new car, two used cars were sold.

As is the case with new passenger car sales, used car sales started 2023 positively, but far from the pre-pandemic figures. Specifically, during the first month of 2023 133,292 units were sold, which is 1.8% more than in January last year. However, this data is 17% lower than that registered before the coronavirus crisis. Thus, according to the employers’ associations Faconauto (dealers) and Ganvam (distributors), for every new car two used ones were sold.

Guide to LEZ 2023: what they are, where they are and how Low Emission Zones work

Mainly, this slight increase responds to the growth in operations from rental fleets. The rent a car used sales increased by 36% (up to 10,463 units), while leasing operators did the same by 7% (9,137 units.) The rest of the channels fell.

Old used ones are still the most demanded

By age, and due to this increase in rental fleets, young used vehicles from 1 to 3 years old grew by almost 10% to reach 8,374 units. More than these, however, grew the models between 5 and 8 years old, with a total of 13,992 units (around 15% more.) As usual, the bulk of operations continues to be in the vehicles older than 1 year: concentrated 57.5% of sales with a volume of 76,723 units.

Regarding the Energy sources, diesel models, which represented 55.6% of operations, decreased their sales by 3.3%; gasoline increased 6%; and the pure electric began the year in negative with 7.1% less (703 units.) The gasoline plug-in hybrids, for their part, rose 47% to 1,104 units.

«The arrival on the used market of units from fleets and leasing explains the growth in the month of January. In any case, we are talking about very modest growth and what is to be expected is that, in the coming months, we will return to the trend that we have been dragging along since the end of the pandemic and that it is chronifying: drop in the transfers of young models up to three years old and a strong prominence of models over ten. We do not expect a change in trend in the year as a whole, which will register numbers very similar to those of 2022, according to our forecast, “they say from Faconauto.
