Every year, RACE does a study to analyze what have been the roads that accumulated more accidents at the national level. In total, 25,100 kilometers of roads have been taken into account, of which 1,836 kilometers are considered to have a high risk of danger. It’s represents 8.2% of the total, an unflattering figure that reveals the poor condition of many sections. To classify them, the Risk Index is used, a scale obtained through accidents in the last three years for every 1,000 million vehicle kilometers.
According to this classification, we have taken 48 high-risk sections, 40 of them considered as black and the remaining 8 as red, one step below in terms of danger. Interestingly, the Autonomous Communities with the highest concentration of these sections are The Rioja (17.2% of the roads), Catalonia (12.6%) and Asturias (11.6%). Most of the roads that accumulate more accidents have the following points in common: they are a conventional single carriageway road, with intersections at the same level and low intensity.
It is curious that the safer roads They are precisely the ones that have the most vehicles on a daily basis, although the reason is the lower percentage of accidents and the fewer consequences they have. If we go to the most dangerous road in the country it would be the N-634 in Cantabria, specifically between kilometer points 232.8 and 243.1. It is followed by others such as the N-340 (Andalusia), N-230 (Catalonia), N-345 (Murcia), N-234 (Aragon), N-323 (Andalusia), N-331 (Andalusia) and the N- 122 (Castile and Leon). The Andalusian N-340 and the Murcian N-345 are of particular concern because they have been repeating themselves since 2018 on this list.
The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA) has already acted in nine of the black sections with measures such as the improvement of the pavement or signaling and beaconing. There is still a lot to do, but the data collected is not particularly bad. has experienced a decrease of 9.3% in serious and fatal accidents compared to 2021. There remains a balance of 3,067 claims, of which 967 were fatal and left 1,060 dead. There were also 2,100 accidents with a balance of 2,684 serious injuries.
