It is no secret that Porsche is one of the brands that they better take care of their classics. Due to the value they have and because most of them are still active, the German brand has a complete catalog of original parts for the older members of the family and even current solutions such as the PCCM and PCCM Plus multimedia systems. Now a component is added that could be interesting for many, the Magnesium crankcase for classic 911s They were manufactured between 1968 and 1976.
It corresponds to the F and G series of the mythical sports car, which are available with 2.0, 2.2, 2.4 and 2.7 liter engines. From this list, probably the most special and well-known is the 911 Carrera RS 2.7, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022. The fact is that all the owners of these vehicles will be able to change the crankcase of their mounts with a totally original piece and through official Porsche Centers. It is an exemplary solution, since until now it had to be repaired by welding or reusing other parts.
This part of the engine in which the crankshaft moves have been one of the most demanded pieces by the owners of those vehicles. And at Porsche Classic they have decided to listen and make these magnesium crankcases available to you after an exemplary job. After obtaining the original plans and reviewing the company file to contact former workers, they got down to work. With the CAD data, a supplier makes them the casing by sand casting. This means that the molds are made with resin-bonded sand and then destroyed to release the casting.
The hollow parts of the part are then machined on a five-axis CNC machine and some material is removed. These magnesium crankcases are also subjected to a strict quality control with more than 1,300 control points, including the measurement of individually machined parts with 3D probes. To get to that they had to test these crankcases on a test engine for several weeks and always with multiple measurement sensors. Curiously, the recipient car was a Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7.
Currently, Porsche Classic has more than 80,000 components in its catalog of Original Parts and Accessories. The number only increases, since since 2013 some 200 pieces have been reissued. They are also doing research in the field of technology with these modern multimedia systems and have recently launched the “Performance Parts” line to improve the performance of the classics.
