The next electric Nissan and e-POWER will have shared technical elements

With the name X-in-1which we could translate as “all in one”, nissan presented its new approach to the development of the electrified powertrain that its next-generation cars will use.

Under this approach, the basic components of 100% electric powertrains like the one in the Ariya and of the models ePOWER (Extended Range Electric) will be modularized and shared, resulting in a 30% reduction compared to 2019 in both development and manufacturing costs, all starting in 2026.

Nissan has already developed a 3-in-1 prototype, where it modularizes the motor, the inverter and the reducer, three central components in electric vehicles. A 5-in-1 prototype is planned, which will also add the generator and the multiplier, which are necessary in the e-POWER models.

The X-in-1 approach has been developed to allow the major components of an electrified powertrain to be produced on the same line and be compatible regardless of model or technology type.

According to the brand, the new X-in-1 approach has the following benefits:

  • Sharing and modularizing major components improves production efficiency and reduces powertrain costs by approximately 30% compared to 2019. Nissan aims to achieve e-POWER price parity with ICE vehicles by 2026
  • Reducing the size and weight of the unit improves the driving performance of the vehicle and minimizes noise and vibration.
  • Adoption of a newly developed engine that reduces the use of rare earth elements to 1% or less.

The Nissan Ambition 2030 strategic plan aims to bolster the lineup with 27 new electrified models, including 19 EVs, by fiscal 2030.
