Continues to bleed: lost leadership in China to rivals

Huawei is no longer the best-selling smartphone brand in China due to embargoes imposed by the United States. Huawei was one of the companies most affected by the ongoing technology wars between America and China, faced with various embargoes during the period of former American President Donald Trump. Huawei, whose android license was revoked by Google, was then taken to the black list of America and prevented from doing business with companies in the country. The Chinese company will begin to feel the pressure more severe in 2021. Huawei is expected to take a heavy hit in phone sales this year.

LEADERSHIP IN CHINA IN 2021

Huawei started to decline in the first month of 2021. Oppo rose to leadership in China, the world's largest smartphone market, surpassing Huawei. Also, another Chinese brand, Vivo, took the second place. Oppo reached 21 percent market share in China in January 2021 and became the best-selling smartphone brand. Vivo, which has a market share of 20 percent, took the second place. Huawei, Apple and Xiaomi, which each have a market share of 16 percent, were other popular smartphone brands in China. Oppo owes this success to the "Reno" series. The Chinese company managed to increase its smartphone sales in China in January by 26 percent on an annual basis and 33 percent on a monthly basis. Currently, Oppo and Vivo hold almost half of the smartphone market in China. Huawei, on the other hand, continues to lose blood due to America's embargoes.

HUAWEI HIT DUE TO 5G

In the last quarter of 2020, 65 percent of smartphones sold in China were 5G supported. Huawei's troubles in the supply of 5G phones hit the company heavily.
