This creature can survive even if its head is severed

Sea slugs, which attract the attention of scientists, can combine with the body after a certain period of time and start a new life, even if their head is cut off. In the incident observed by biologists, the sea slugs, whom they thought they were attacked by a predator and were about to die, did not pay much attention, and continued to live, although they were decapitated.

Wounds healed, heart renewed

Uncovering a surprising discovery, researcher Sayaka Mitoh of the University of Nara in Japan observed that while examining the sacoglossus, a marine snail species, its head moved and survived. According to his statement, this living body was slowly regenerating itself. Separated from the body, the head feeds on algae and moves after a few hours. It was witnessed that the wounds began to heal after days, and a week later, the heart began to regenerate. All of these shocking events were completed in about a month.

When parasite infestation …

According to the evaluation in Le Matin; These slugs can cut off their own heads when their bodies are infested with parasites. In this way, they can both get rid of parasites and regeneration takes place in the body.

Working with the biologist team

After the first cases were discovered in the cells and not all slugs were found to be able to heal, the team led by Biologist Yoichi Yusa conducted a larger study. In the study, some were able to renew themselves even if they were beheaded twice, while some could not feed themselves, and these were especially those in the elderly group. In their research, scientists realized that if there is still movement a few hours after the head is separated from the body, regeneration occurs only from the head and that there are stem cells at the base of the neck that can regenerate the body.
