Imagine that you make covers for pick-ups and you claim to have built the most resistant and hardest of all time. How to prove it? Well, placing a new pick-up on it. in the purest style Myth Busters. that is just what GFC (Go Fast Campers) did to present its new Platform Topper.
You see the image and you think there’s a trick… but obviously they recorded a video and it not only supports all that weight, but also the rear door opens perfectly. We were speechless. It’s so strong that they had to reinforce the bed of the Toyota Tacoma to match the strength of their Topper and allow it to support the aging Ford F-250. They also did tests with a cover made of fiberglass but, although it did not do badly at all, it did not match the Platform Topper. The best thing is that you see it on video:
Why would someone need a pick-up cover that can support the weight of a second pick-up? We believe that no one, but that is not the question, but to demonstrate that it has been manufactured well (that there is more engineering behind it than it may seem at first glance) and that despite being cheaper than other premium covers (it costs $3,995) , it may hold more than the pick-up itself. Plus, it’s the only topper that turns into a portable “cabin.”
Wiley Davis, founder and CEO of GFC, says that his Platform Topper “allows truck owners to transport anything safely and easily access it. Our obsessive attention to detail, parts and chassis deliver a level of strength and longevity never seen before.”
The Platform Topper is designed for hard work in difficult terrain and can support up to 360kg of dynamic load on its roof. They have achieved this by using an aluminum tubular space frame reinforced with aluminum parts. All connections in that space frame are bolted rather than welded, to eliminate the possibility of stress fractures. The space frame (an idea, by the way, from Alexander Graham Bell), distributes loads evenly around the entire perimeter of the pick-up bed. In addition, they manufacture it to measure for each make and model. From the Toyota Tacoma to the Ford Ranger or Jeep Gladiator.
