The European Commission proposes that 17-year-olds can get behind the wheel of a car or truck after passing the necessary exams and as long as they are accompanied. Will it be accepted?

It is nothing new; The fact of wanting to advance the age to start driving at 17 or even at 16 has already been discussed in Europe on other occasions. Some countries such as France or Germany, in fact, allow it… and, although it is true that they are two of the European countries that register the most road deaths annually, this is generally due more to the area and the population that they have than as regards this news. The fact is that now the one who proposes it is the European Commission, so could come to fruition.

How to recover points from the driving license

In any case, this is not a proposition to be launched lightly. Of course, in addition to the theoretical and practical exams necessary to demonstrate suitable abilities, other conditions would have to be added that would allow a 17-year-old to drive (we are referring to a car, a van or even a truck, of course.) They could only do so accompanied by an adult over 25 years of age and with a minimum of five years driving experience. In addition, tolerance to alcohol would be zero and the consideration of a new driver would be extended to two years.

Currently in Spain the AM license is already in force that allows older than 15 years driving a moped and even a vehicle of up to 7 kW of power with a maximum speed of 45 km/h. In a very short time, the new B1 card will also arrive in our country, intended for users aged 16 and over who can drive L7 quadricycles or, in other words, those light vehicles of up to 15 kW of power (20.4 CV), 400 kg of weight (550 kg in the case of vehicles for the transport of merchandise) and with a maximum speed of 90 km/h. It is the step before what we know as a car license (B.) Will there be, therefore, a new intermediate step between this B1 and B?
