From scare to scare This is how Formula 1 and its lower categories go in the last grand prix. After what Esteban Ocon almost ran over to dozens of photographers at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and that a crane removed the car of Charles Leclerc in Miami while the Porsche SuperCup cars were rolling, in the F2 race in monaco The most dangerous situation that has occurred in a circuit recently has occurred.
It has as protagonists to two Alpine riders: Jack Doohan, son of the legendary former motorcycle racer, and the French Victor Martins. Doohan had had an accident in turn 3, the most difficult of the Monte Carlo circuit as it was a totally blind turn, which caused safety car exit so that the track marshals could remove the Australian’s car.
But Martins did ignore the yellow flags and it didn’t decelerate enough, coming at high speed to the point where Doohan’s wrecked car was without being able to see it until the last moment. Fortunately, the Frenchman was able to react in time and avoid running over the workers at the last moment, dodging them by a few centimetres.
However, the action did not go unnoticed by the race director, who opened an investigation in which it was shown that Martins did not brake when he saw the yellow flags, for which he was penalized with a ‘drive through’, that is, a mandatory passage through the pit lane.
After the repeated incidents that have taken place in recent months, especially that of the 2022 Japanese Grand Prix, in which Pierre Gasly was about to collide with a crane, Formula 1 has launched a new control system this weekend that forces drivers to go slower at those points where there is a car in accident.
However, this system is not yet in force in the lower categories, so it did not act in the case of Martins and Doohan, although the incident will reopen in the bosom of the FIA the debate on how to strengthen security at grand prix.
