Why doesn’t Horacio Pagani create an electric hypercar?

What’s going on?

The transition to electric mobility It is being carried out by more and more manufacturers from all over the planet, in what is an advance that is indistinguishable from commercial, family or sports vehicles. However, there are some brands that, at least for the moment, refuse to have battery-powered vehicles, such as Pagani Automobili. Yes, we are referring to the Italian firm created by the Argentine Horace Paganiwhich less than a year ago presented its third hypercar: the Utopia.

Recently, members of the brand were asked about their possible foray into electric mobility, to which they responded that, at least in the short term, they will not launch any battery models. What is the reason for Pagani’s refusal? To what is practically already a registered trademark of the Modena firm’s models. And which one is it? Well, in order to have an answer, we must first inquire about some characteristic questions in the history of the Italian house.

Pagani and the search for low weight

Towards the end of the ’80s, Horacio Pagani directed the development of the Lamborghini Countach Evolutionprototype in which the carbon fiber it took a leading role, as it formed part of both the chassis and the bodywork, among other elements.

Since that work, Pagani specialized in carbon fiber, a material that, among other benefits, was lighter than those used until then, which allowed him (together with other works) his hypercars to have a extremely low weight. Obviously, both the Zonda, the Huayra and the aforementioned Utopia They are mostly made with said material.

The answer given by the Italian brand goes hand in hand with one of the biggest problems faced by manufacturers of electric models: the weight of the batteries. Specific, Christopher Paganison of Horacio, told the British outlet TopGear that the current batteries they are too heavywhich threatens the constant search of the brand to offer low weight models.

The recent statements are added to those said by Pagani father in 2020, when, in statements to Infobae, he commented: “The few electric cars that exist weigh more than two tons, and by our philosophy we cannot make such a heavy car”.

To get an idea, the Rimac Refrigerator, one of the main current electric hypercars, takes the scales to the 2,150kg. On the other hand, the Pagani Zonda, Huayra and Utopia do not exceed 1,350kg. Apparently, the brand is not willing to almost double the weight of your models. “Until we get the electric car weigh less than 1,700 kgwe are not going to continue advancing on the subject”, Pagani added in the aforementioned interview.

Beyond the current refusal, the truth is that Pagani is working on the development of a battery-powered modelmore precisely from 2018. It will be necessary to be attentive to receive news on the subject, although, at least for now, it seems that the work will continue for a long time.

What do you think about what was pointed out by the Pagani?
