Volvo’s history with relatives is a romantic idyll that has left us with really attractive vehicles, as well as practical ones. They have been working on this type of bodywork masterfully and in different ways for more than seven decades. In fact, there are few more distinctive than that of the two-door shooting brake, because at present we hardly find models with that configuration. The Volvo P1800 EN It has earned the admiration of many followers of the Swedish brand and is currently well valued for its exclusivity.
The Volvo P1800 came out in 1961 as a sporty model, a coupé that sought to dazzle with its Italian design and British construction. The truth is that it was quite successful in its time and almost 40,000 units were sold in the decade it was on the market. However, in its last years of production, it flirted with the possibility of doing it in a family version. The result was the P1800 ES designed by Jan Wilsgaardwhich had nothing to envy the coupe.
It was in 1972 when this model came out that kept the front, but completely transformed the rear of the P1800 made by Pietro Frua. The truth is that I know keep both doorsalthough later the line of the roof is extended until it ends in a rear style Kammback, with a rear window that is one of the most outstanding parts of the model. The Volvo P1800 ES does not have a door or trunk access gate, so the glass opens completely.
The rear seats can be folded down for a flat cargo surface to carry golf clubs, hunting gear, surfboards and you could even sleep in the back. The interior, in addition to offering that space, also stood out for quality above average and for its level of security. Volvo has always boasted in that aspect and this copy already had seat belts and other benefits.
The Volvo P1800 ES mounted a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, the B20 that was present in the last years of the model’s life. It got 125 CV of power, enough to move it with ease. Although the increasingly strict emissions regulations in the United States gave it problems. In fact, it had to be withdrawn after only two years of production. between 1972 and 1973 8,077 units were made of this specimen, which are now highly valued. One of them was recently auctioned for 32,500 euros.
