better than 2022 but far from pre-pandemic

New car registrations increased in January 2023 by 51.4%, to a total of 64,147 units sold, if we compare it with January 2022. The causes of this large increase is due to the fact that there was a large remainder of vehicles sold in December that were registered in January and that last year the microchip crisis and other bottlenecks in transport logistics was at its worst moments.

Of course, when we compare this data with the figures for the month of January 2020, just before the pandemic, it does not come out so well. So 86,443 units were sold, so we are still 25.8% below the market normal.

Who buys the cars? Well, the truth is that January shows a notable increase in all channels, especially in the rental market, which was the most affected by the lack of supply and stock:

Again, if we compare with the market situation before the lockdowns, there are falls. 21% in the case of individuals, 14.7% in the case of companies and up to -678.4% in the case of rent-a-car.

On the other hand, the data on average CO2 emissions from passenger cars sold in January indicates that electrification is still slow: It was 118.3 grams of CO2 per km traveled, barely 0.13% lower than the average emissions of new passenger cars sold in the same month of 2022.

Manufacturers applaud the increase in sales, but remember that the Filomena storm kept dealerships closed for several days (or people unable to attend). In addition, “sales directed to the private channel are still very low and it is necessary to see how much of the increase produced in January is due to vehicles that were not distributed in the last months of 2022.” They point out that incentives are necessary “both from the economic and fiscal spheres, which alleviate inflationary pressure.”

From the dealership association, Faconauto are not optimistic and point out that “the context that weighed down the market remains the same and it is foreseeable that, in the coming months, we will again see a very low level of registrations”. From Ganvam they celebrate double-digit growth, although January 2022 had been “the second worst January in more than two decades due to the chip crisis.” The improvement improves “we have to receive it with caution because the tensions in the supply chain and in the logistics chain are still present.”
