The Spaniard sets the tenth fastest time in free practice between problems and the promotion of Williams or Alpine
“Guys, I got hit by a rock. It hurts, but I’m going to keep going.” What else could happen to Fernando Alonso this Friday? So far this season the Spaniard had not experienced a day like this, a day of misfortune, a bad time. Under the sun that scorched the Silverstone circuit, Alonso suffered in the first two free practice sessions of the British Grand Prix for his own reasons and for reasons of others. Can he get on the podium on Sunday? Of course. But his Aston Martin must improve, he must improve and, above all, his luck must improve.
Because fortune punished him up to two times. In the first, after getting on a piano, the tire on one of his front wheels suffered a break and he had to go into the garage to repair it. And in the second, a stone crashed into his hand and caused him some pain. The pilots usually have their hands protected in the cockpit, but when they turn the steering wheel they are exposed and in one of those moments Alonso received the impact. Strange, unusual. It’s already bad luck.
With all this, the Spaniard had no reason to be happy this Friday and had to be optimistic. “We’ll see how we go tomorrow, we hope to improve,” he commented and they should do it. A few meters from its own factory, Aston Martin suffered this Friday at Silverstone, no longer because of the distance from Red Bull, the dominant team, but rather because of the increase in rivals.
Happy for Sainz
From what was seen in the tests, the Ferrari drivers will opt for the podium in the race, but we will also have to reckon with the Williams, who set the third and fifth best times, and even with the Haas and the Alpine. Because of his problems, Alonso could only set the tenth fastest time, but his partner, Lance Stroll, who did not suffer any mishap, was left with sixth place. The good news for Aston Martin is that this Saturday the weather will change radically and it will surely rain and that the Mercedes, a priori favorites in this race, will suffer.
The other side of chance this Friday was Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard from Ferrari was the only one capable of approaching Verstappen on the time table and, what’s more, he was only 22 thousandths of a second away from passing him. While his partner charles leclerc, he suffered a serious breakdown and could not even participate in training, he completed numerous laps and presented his candidacy for victory. Last year he took pole position here and the first victory of his career. Why can’t it be repeated?
