FIA President Ben Sulayem steps down as F1 manager

FIA President, Mohammed ben Sulayem, has resigned to continue directing Formula 1 after all the conflict with Liberty Media, the company that manages the competition. The president had been in conflict with Liberty with cross statements for a few weeks.

In a letter that ‘Daily Mail’ has revealed and which was addressed to the team leaders, Sulayem justifies his decision as follows: “My goal was to be non-executive chairman by recruiting a team of professional managers, which has already been largely completed.”

“Therefore, from now on, your daily contact for all F1 matters will be with Nikolas Tombazis (single-seater technical director) and his team, while I will focus on strategic issues with my management team.”

The FIA has also come out to explain the decision of its president, ensuring that it was part of his roadmap: “The appointment of an FIA Director General to provide an integrated and aligned operation, as well as introduce a revised governance framework under a leadership team focused on transparency, democracy and growth.”

“These objectives, as well as the announcement of the new structure of the single-seater department, have been planned since the start of this presidency. The FIA President has a broad mandate that spans the breadth of world motorsport and mobility, and now that The structural reorganization in F1 has been completed, this is the next natural step,” an FIA spokesman said.

F1 and the FIA have clashed in recent days over the alleged Saudi offer to buy the competition. In addition, both agencies were also unable to agree on the opening for new teams to be present in the paddock
