The gas station employers warn of a recent legal change that could increase the price of gasoline and diesel during 2023 by 15 and 27 cents per liter, respectively.

If we already started 2023 without the highly appreciated government aid that discounted individuals 20 cents per liter of fuel, it seems that things regarding the price of gasoline and diesel will not improve throughout the year. A new European standard that all EU member countries are obliged to comply with (in fact, it has been in the BOE since January 1) It will make between three and six cents more expensive for each liter of fuel.

This is how the fuel price pie is distributed

This is the Community Fuel Quality Directive (FQD) and its main objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that fuels generate throughout their life cycle. Specifically, Brussels wants to lower them by 6% compared to the values of 2010. The question is, of course, that they intend to try it through a series of measures that, as we say, will have a direct impact on our pocket every time we visit a gas station.

It depends on the Government, not on the gas stations

But there is more… As the Spanish Confederation of Service Station Entrepreneurs (CEEES) warns, this It would not be the only legislative initiative that could affect fuel prices in the coming months. “The National Sustainability Fund for the Electric System is currently undergoing parliamentary processing, which, if approved, would make fuel more expensive by up to seven cents per liter. Not to mention the hackneyed need for fiscal equalization between diesel and gasoline, which, if materialized, would make diesel more expensive by 11.5 cents per liter. In addition, if Minister María Jesús Montero follows the recommendations made by the group of experts chosen by her own Ministry, she should increase the tax on hydrocarbons by another 5.4 cents per liter », she commented.

Therefore, it would not be surprising if, as 2023 progresses, the prices of gasoline and diesel continue to increase until they reach to pay 15 and 27 cents per liter more than what we pay now, respectively. How far will we go? Well, to a large extent, it depends on our government…
