If CDMX transportation were completely electric, 40.5 thousand tons of CO2 would be eliminated

A company like a Mexican institution, reveal the results of an investigation about electric vehicles and the positive results that they would generate in CDMX.

What’s happening?

The EGADE Business School of the Tecnológico de Monterrey and VEMO, a Mexican company that seeks to accelerate clean mobility in Latin America, published a study which analyzes the effect it would have on the CDMX environmentif the transport buses of the Mexican capital were completely electric.

The study, entitled “Electromobility in Mexico: a proposal for the mitigation of emissions and its impact on health”, concluded that the electrification of public transport buses would mitigate 40.5 thousand tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, equivalent to the absorption of CO2 that would be carried out by 1.9 million adult trees in the same period; and 364 tons of toxic pollutants, mainly nitrogen oxides (NOx).

Currently it is a reality that emissions from transport do not stop increasing. Given the high dependence on fossil fuels, transportation represents 65% of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions in cities. Regarding pollutant emissions that affect air quality, 75% of particulate matter 2.5 (PM 2.5) comes from freight and bus transportation, while in the case of NOxtransport is responsible for 88% (Carbon Trust, 2018).

To estimate the reduction in emissions from public transport when using electric buses instead of internal combustion buses, the analysis followed a methodology that considered the specific consumption of both technologies and the emission factor of the national electrical system of Mexico.

According to its authors, the study shows that, as the world pursues the vision of a decarbonized transportation market that is more responsible with the environment and people, the contribution of electric vehicles will undoubtedly be significant.

What does the study say about electric vehicles?

The analysis raised four central ideas around electric vehicles:

  1. Electric vehicles have an impact: on climate change, by reducing GHG emissions; in the economy, by caring for productivity and reducing public health costs, and in health, by reducing toxic pollutants.
  2. Considering their entire useful life (from the extraction of raw materials to final disposal), electric vehicles are a climate change mitigation measure as they have a lower carbon footprint, particularly when they are used intensively and travel large amounts of kilometers. .
  3. The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions increases when the energy matrix of the region where the vehicle is recharged has a greater penetration of clean energy.
  4. The electrification of public transport can be a key piece in the evolution of the electric car industry.

In this regard, Osmar Zavaleta Vázquez, professor in the Department of Finance and Business Economics at EGADE Business School and co-author of the study, commented: “It is essential to take measures to reduce pollution generated by transport, in order to improve air quality and decrease emissions that contribute to global warming across the country. There is no single solution to this problem. However, all the actions that we undertake to reduce the need to travel in vehicles, whether gasoline or electric, will have a positive impact in reducing polluting emissions”.

For her part, Yolanda Villegas González, legal director of Compliance and Institutional Relations at VEMO, and also co-author of the analysis, highlighted: “Climate change is approached from different perspectives, especially in the field of mobility. There are several options available to promote electric vehicles and their positive environmental impact, as well as to reduce costs. In addition, joint efforts are being carried out with companies and organizations that are promoting electromobility. These actions seek to reach a broader public and generate momentum for a transition towards a clean and sustainable transport system that meets the needs of the population”.
