Mazda is on long tablecloths because it will launch a new SUV in Mexico, but before its official unveiling, it invited us to meet it and drive it in Canada. Here we tell you all our experience, as well as all the details we know about the new Mazda CX-50 2023.
Mazda CX-50 2023: Platform and dimensions
This CX-50 is manufactured in the United States, at the Mazda plant in Huntsville, Alabama and will only be sold for the North American market, including Mexico. Possibly it could be seen in some country in South America.
This SUV uses the brand’s 7th generation platform, the same one used by the CX-3 or Mazda3, but since it is modular, it allows the dimensions of the car to be increased in all aspects, including the wheelbase.
This truck comes to be located between the CX-5 and the CX-9, in Mexico and will start selling next March. On the other hand, we have to clarify that it has nothing to do with the CX-5, it is a completely different vehicle in terms of size, performance and more.
Speaking of dimensions, measure:
- 4.7m long (14.5cm than CX-5)
- 1.9 m wide (7.6 cm more than CX-5)
- It has a chassis to floor height of 21.8 cm (1.8 cm more than CX-5)

Mazda CX-50 2023: Design
Regarding design, we have that this new truck offers a robust and powerful appearance. It has design traces on the outside, which make it look more square. While inside, it uses marked horizontal and vertical lines, which can be seen on the console as well as on the vents.
About the design elements we have:
- Headlights steerable as LED skulls.
- Panoramic roof (it is the first Mazda vehicle to display it).
- Grille with piano black accents.
- Black fascias with aluminum colored insert and vertical air intakes.
- Protections in black plastic for doors.
- CX-50 badging and upper spoiler.
Highlight:
- In the frame of the doors there is a protector that prevents water or mud from getting inside.
- The design of the 20″ wheels, have a design finish in the final part of the arms so that they do not get hurt so easily, for example, with rocks.
- It will arrive in Mexico in three colors: sand, metallic blue and pearl white.
Mazda CX-50 2023: Mechanics
This CX-50 uses the same engine that we find in the CX-5 or CX-9, but it has the peculiarity that the turbo is twin scroll, which provides a better acceleration response, reducing turbolag. It also stands out, that it boasts an all-wheel drive system, the same one that CX-9 has, the i-Activ AWD, which actively monitors road conditions to assign more or less torque as required to each wheel. This system works in conjunction with the G-Vectoring control. The block that this CX-50 has is:
- 2.5L 4-cylinder turbo
- 228 Hp and 310 Lb-ft of torque.
- The transmission is a six-speed automatic.
Mazda CX-50 2023: Interior and equipment
In terms of space and habitability, five passengers can travel comfortably in this new CX-50, you are really very loose with plenty of room for head and legs. About elements of convenience in rear seats, you have air vents, heated seats as double USB charging input.

2023 Mazda CX-50: Handling and Route
As I told you at the beginning, we came to know and drive this CX-50 in Canada, specifically in Vancouver. From here we drive to the town of Whistler (famous because people come here to ski). We traveled a total of 275 km, our route included part of the city, a lot of highway, hills, mountains, some dirt, very little snow, curves and several slopes. The spectacle of the landscapes is something that did not impress.
By having a 2.5L engine with the aforementioned specifications and a twin scroll turbo, the acceleration response of this CX-50 is really brisk, speed recovery is something that it does very easily and with this you will be able to carry happy rhythms of 140 km/h, while the block will go relaxed at 2,000 laps.

The performance of the box is effective, with smooth, fast and precise changes. Accounts with manual mode, which can be operated by rocking movements on the lever or with the paddles.
Regarding the behavior of the truck in stressful situations, it gives good poise in curves, it stands up well, so it gives you a lot of confidence to go fast. The adjustment of the suspension and the height are very convenient, since they adequately filter the imperfections of the road at the moment that the chassis does not hit anything.
As for the braking, it is precise, works quickly at the command of the pedal. The steering gives a lot of feedback from the road, and it’s not artificial at all. It is very opportune, at low speeds it is smooth and stiff when going fast.
2023 Mazda CX-50: Conclusion
Well, I already told you all the details of this new CX-50, as well as its arrival date (mid-March). We also do not have prices or versions, all this will be known until then.
At the moment I am very happy with this truck, which I have to say is very versatile, for any use, be it city or to live an adventure on the weekend. It has everything to make it your daily vehicle, to go for a walk with friends or family, as it has all the benefits such as amenities to travel very comfortable, safe and that no matter which route you choose, it can take you effectively.
I can tell you that it is an impressive truck, very tough, robust, that has the refinement that Mazda always offers us. and the power to do what you want.
