New McLaren 750S, lighter power

New McLaren 750S, lighter power

There was a lot of expectation deposited by the presentation of the McLaren 750S, the direct successor to the successful 720S. While they are remarkably similar on the outside (the company clarified that they share 70% of the components) When we look with an expert eye, we can see that we are not facing a simple restyling, but really an important renovation.

One of the first issues to take into account is that the 750S has been presented since its inception in spider and coupe versions. The coupe weighs 1,389 kg, (about 30 kg less than the 720) while the spider weighs 1437 kg. Why does the version with a mobile roof weigh more? because extra structural reinforcements are needed and the drive mechanism to lower the roof is added. To contain their weight, both versions benefit from new lighter carbon fiber seats, a lighter exhaust, forged wheels and an even lighter driver screen and windshield.

McLaren 750S, mechanics

The McLaren 750S features the familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 of the orange brand But compared to the 720S, this engine it now has more pressure in its turbos, an extra fuel pump to maintain fuel injector pressure, and pistons that come from the 765L.

All this means that that 4.0L twin-turbo V8 now delivers 740 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, increases of 30 hp and 22 lb-ft respectively. To bring this force to the ground, a seven-speed sequential automatic transmission continues to be used, but with a shorter gear ratio.

These enhancements allow the 750S to:

  • 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds
  • 0 to 200 km/h in 7.2 seconds
  • 0 to 300 km/h in 19.8 seconds
  • Maximum speed is 332 km/h.

Continuing with the mechanical, McLaren recalibrated the entire suspension, from the hydraulic anti-roll system to the shock absorbers and springs. The front end is slightly wider and the steering rack now has a faster ratio. On the other hand, a new track brake package using 15.4-inch carbon ceramic rotors and monobloc calipers based on the system from the McLaren Senna.

McLaren 750S, design

As we mentioned at the beginning, there is not much to say in terms of aesthetics, since little has changed compared to the past 720S. We now get a lowered front end, smaller headlight intakes, a deeper lip spoiler, new side air intakes, and a longer tail with a larger but lighter rear wing.

Inside doors we don’t have a great revolution eitherexcept for the new seats and instrument display. On the tech side, Apple CarPlay is now included as standard, and there’s also now a custom drive mode feature that allows drivers to set preferences to their liking for engine, chassis and transmission settings and access them with just touch a button.

Did you like the new McLaren 750S? Do you want to buy it? McLaren is taking orders, but keep in mind that to take the US as an example, the coupe version starts at $331,740 including shipping, while the Spider starts at $352,740. And no, treating yourself is not usually cheap.
