The year 2022 was quite bad for new car registrations in Spain. Anfac reported at the beginning of 2023 that 813,396 units had been sold, -5.2% of the registrations registered in 2021. Supply problems, the war in Ukraine, inflation and uncertainty… the truth is that the moment is not good. But beware, there are green shoots: in 2022, 36,444 electric vehicles were sold (31.28% more than in 2021) and another 48,193 plug-in hybrids.
The figure includes commercial and industrial, but if we talk about tourism with plug the figure rises to 78,329 units. 9.63% of total registrations, which is far from the EU average, where it reaches 19.3%. If we compare it with a year ago, the growth is barely 1.85%. It would be necessary to see if, with availability of models, the figures would improve.
It must be recognized that we are far from the 120,000 electrified units that the PNIEC set to meet in 2030… but also that they are the propulsion system that is growing the most compared to last year:

Sales of diesel cars fall – the most – and gasoline (be careful, Anfac puts mild hybrids in the hybrid bag, as both have the same ECO label). If we add all the electrified vehicles, Anfac tells us about 40.91% of sales, which is not bad.
There is some information that we would like to highlight:
- The plug-in hybrids slow down. They are still sold more than pure electric, but they have only grown by 11.27% in 2022.
- Madrid concentrates 45.18% of sales of electrified of Spain. It was also the first city to have a low emission zone… which from 2022 will reach centers with more than 50,000 inhabitants. The figure is largely explained by car sharing companies.
- Sales of electric vans are growing a lot, 32.8% more than in 2021. It is noticeable that there is much more supply than plug-in hybrids.
The best-selling electric cars in Spain in 2022
The brands that have registered the most electric cars were Tesla, Kia and Hyundai. In the list of models below, the absence of VAG Group models stands out, which shows that they are diverting the meager production to other European countries.

For the rest, we see that the Fiat 500 is the only model that falls between the Tesla Model 3 and the Tesla Model Y. Kia is the only brand, apart from Tesla, to place two models in the Top 10, the Kia eNiro and the EV6.
The best-selling plug-in hybrid cars in Spain in 2022
For its part, the Peugeot 3008 is the best-selling plug-in hybrid model in our country last year, although the fall in the total number of registrations shows the exhaustion of a model that should not take long to be renewed (at the end of 2022 a second hybrid mechanics was added).

The brand that stands out in plug-in hybrids is Mercedes. Not only for having two models in the top 10, with the A-Class and the Mercedes GLC, but for the range in general, really complete.
For its part, the winner among the plug-in hybrids was none other than the Toyota Corolla and, among the gas ones, the Dacia Sandero LPG, with the Jogger LPG following quite a distance away. As for gasoline engines without electrification, it was the Seat Arona that was the best seller, with the Volkswagen T-Cross following. With a diesel engine, the Audi Q3 and the Citroën C4 were the favorites in the Spanish market.
The manufacturers point out that the rate of penetration of plug-in plugs is extremely slow and “they should have closed the year with a share above 14% to meet the decarbonization objectives set by the Government.” Despite the logistical problems, in other markets it has better data, above 20% in Portugal or 26% in Germany. “We need urgent measures for 2023, 2024 and 2025 that encourage the purchase of these vehicles so as not to jeopardize investments and employment.”
