By 2025, Sweden aims to build the first road for electric car charging, although it is not yet known what technology will be used.

Sweden is thinking of a solution that, although it is not definitive, can alleviate the headaches that charging points pose to drivers of electric cars. The Scandinavian country has just announced plans to build the world’s first electrified highwaywhich will allow electric cars to charge while driving on its surface.

This would spare electric vehicle users the hassle of searching and waiting at charging stationssince, in theory, the road can provide all the necessary energy.

The Swedish transport administration has pointed out that the E20 motorway, which It is located in the middle of three large cities in the country (Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö), will be the first to receive this technology.

It should be ready by 2025

“We believe that electrification is The way forward to decarbonise the transport sector and we are working on various solutions,” Jan Pettersson, director of the Swedish transport administration, told Euronews.

The construction of this motorway, whose completion is scheduled for 2025is part of Sweden’s efforts to decarbonise the transport sector and with the aim of aligning with the European Union law that prohibits the sale of new combustion cars from 2035.

The authorities they have not yet decided which charging method will be used on the electrified highway, although three are the most viable options. The first is the catenary systemwhich uses overhead wires to supply power to cars on the road, which would be more suitable for buses or trams.

As a second option, there is talk of a induction systemwhereby equipment is buried under the road that sends power to coils installed in the electric vehicle, charging the vehicle as it passes through the road.

Third, the road could be based on the conductive chargein which electricity is delivered wirelessly to a metal plate on the electric vehicle, much like the charging pads on mobile phones.
