The BMW 7 Series is capable of allowing hands-free driving in the United States and Canada and launches new software for it.
The BMW Group is using the Here HD Live Map software which allows hands-free driving in the United States and Canada, as announced by Here Technologies. Here is one of the first companies in the world to provide high definition maps for Level 2+ automated driving capabilities in series production vehicles.
The BMW 7 Series is the first production vehicle from the German automaker to be launched with American SAE Level 2+ Automated Functions at a maximum speed of 130 km/h.

This feature enables hands-free driving on interstates and highways, as long as the driver stays focused and ready to take control. Here HD Live Map will be integrated into other BMW models as autonomous driving capabilities increase in vehicles, roads and regions.
Here HD Live Maps are comprised of rich, highly accurate data layers for help the vehicle know exactly where it is on the road and what features of it await you.

Lane-level data serves as a redundant information source for on-board sensors, providing additional safety guarantees for the system. In this case, HD Live Map helps the vehicle to proactively adjust their behavior to the characteristics of the road through which it is circulating.
Information is constantly updated using real-time dataincluding those of other vehicles on the road, and provides information about road features such as signs and traffic lights, as well as the topology of the road.
BMW has offered an autonomous driving system for highways since 2018, but the latest version is based on HERE’s aforementioned HD Live Map, which brings added functionality. With this software, the 7 Series driving system has a better idea of where the vehicle is on the road, what road features or what potential dangers lie ahead and what is the best way to react to them.
