Seven years ago, Fernando Alonso suffered what is probably next to Brazil 2003 the biggest accident of his career in Formula 1.
The Asturian, at the wheel of the McLaren-Honda MP4-31, rammed the Haas of Stephen Gutierrez in it Australian Grand Prix 2016.
The two-time world champion did not brake in time, touched his left rear wheel, collided with the protections and his car ended up in pieces.
Not only was it a miracle that Alonso got out of the car on his own foot, but he did it by greeting the fans and reassuring his followers.
“I braked too late and I took him ahead. At 315 kilometers per hour that can happenbut the best thing is that we are both well”, he explained then.
The accident was the darkest stain on the most “frustrating” stage of his Formula 1 careeras he himself explained a few days ago.
This weekend Alonso returns to Melbourne with the intention of adding his third consecutive podium and staying in the fight for the World Cup with the Red Bull of Max Verstappen and ‘Checo’ Pérez.
Safety in F1 was a major issue during this decade, following the sad Jules Bianchi incident at Suzuka in 2014.
