Alpine made a bet with his car, or rather with its power unit, last year. The French team put performance above about reliability, and that caused the car, the one from Fernando Alonso above all, suffered a lot of problems engine related.
The Spaniard had up to four retirements last year, two more if we add problems derived from errors or power unit failures. six zeros, sixwhich made Esteban Ocon defeated Alonso in the Drivers’ World Championship. The Frenchman is in charge of remembering that constantly.
Now, for 2023, Pierre Gasly has been in charge of confirming which are the clear objectives that the team has. what are the goals that, at the development level, have been proposed with the new Alpine.
The pilot, brand new signing of the brand formerly known as Renault, confirms that even they know that the issue of reliabilityand even performance, are aspects to “improve”.
“The team has said that they want to consolidate that fourth position. They want to be more dominant. They want to improve reliability, performance…”, he says.
The plan, without Alonso, is to “close the gap with the first three”: “We know that Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull very fast cars will come. But we know what we’ve done, and that we can close the gap.”
In this sense, Gasly feels liberated after leaving Red Bull: “For me it is a great change. Starting this project, with all those resources… There is no limit, no ceiling. Last year I had it, in a way.”
