Volkswagen thinks of an electric SUV derived from Amarok

The advance of Volkswagen in the electric world has an SUV as a possible new member, according to what was stated by brand executives to European media. Specifically, we are talking about a model that could derive from the new Amarok, and that, as happened with the pick-up, is being developed in conjunction with Ford.

New Volkswagen SUV: What is known?

Speaking to Autocar, the CEO of VW’s Commercial Vehicles division, Carsten Intra, acknowledged that the brand is working, together with Ford, on a project that features an electric SUV. The idea of both brands is that the new vehicle is manufactured on the T6.2 platform, the same as the new Amarok and Ranger, so they are focusing their work on the base, which already allows the use of hybrid systems, to be used on electric models.

Yonstra assured that the project is being worked on with Ford at the headquarters that the American firm owns in Melbourne, Australia, same place where much of the development of the new Amarok was carried out. On the other hand, and if the project continues, it is expected that the brand new vehicle will recover the ID Ruggdzz concept, unveiled to the press at the end of the last decade and never shown to the public.

Regarding the design, the new SUV should have a front similar to that of the new Amarok, while the rear sector would recover the lines of the brand’s SUVs, such as the Taos and the Tiguan. Regarding the powertrain, Volkswagen assured that the battery should have a capacity of 110 kWh, so that it is capable of providing the autonomy and towing capacity they expect.

It is worth remembering that this is not the only project for which Volkswagen is developing an electric SUVtaking into account the work carried out for the return of the Scout brand, which involves the creation of an SUV with off-road characteristics, as well as a battery-powered pick-up.
