The chase scenes in movies they often require precious cars to be sacrificed for our viewing pleasure. A lot of them are done using computer generated imagery (CGI), but What are the most expensive cars that have been destroyed in the set filming? Because we have seen models of all kinds on the big screen, and some very, very expensive, but not really annihilated for that reason.
According to a new study by consultancy confusedthe gold medal goes to the Porsche 917K that was infamously destroyed during the course of filming Le Mans in 1971. Although the accident was not included in the film’s script, the 917K flown by David Piper he ended up in the barriers after blowing out a tire during a high-speed scene. Despite severe damage, it was rebuilt and sold for 14 million dollars in 2017. Today it is worth even more, being by far the most expensive car destroyed by cinema.
Second place goes to the Aston Martin DB10 from Specter(2015), the twenty-fourth installment of Agent 007. While the DB10 largely predated what would become the production Vantage in 2018, it featured bespoke bodywork. The iconic Jaguar C-X75 chase scene in Rome was not kind to the DB10, which ended up sinking in the river. Aston Martin built 10 examples of the model for the film, seven of which were destroyed. One was put up for sale in 2016 €3.6 million at auction.
Third place goes to Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) Rolls-Royce Phantom from the movie Iron Man 2 (2010). The luxury super sedan was destroyed during the pseudo Formula 1 race scene on the streets of Monaco, which wasn’t all CGI. In fact, two copies of the Phantom valued at €495,000 eachwhere the character of Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), used his electrified whiplash to cut them in half.
