Mercedes has been far superior to Aston Martin in this Spanish Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell they finished on the podium. Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso they were sixth and seventh, respectively. All of them, of course, behind a max verstappen to which no one can cough.
But Fernando is not particularly concerned about the step forward that Mercedes has taken. He has shown it in some statements to ‘AS’, in which he has pointed to Canada as the circuit where the most important improvements to Aston Martin will arrive.
“It’s a race… in Canada we crush them. I’m happy because qualifying was the Achilles heel of the weekend. After starting so far back I was able to come back, but only up to a certain point. Both Russell and Checo were faster so there wasn’t much to do. We saved points”, said the Asturian pilot.
“Mercedes added more in terms of constructors but we took points from Ferrari, happy on the one hand. In Canada we will carry more things, in Silverstone too. It will depend on who is carrying the upgrades. Even with a normal qualifying we would have had a better chance,” said the Aston Martin driver.
He stressed that the good news was to have scored more points than Ferrari. “It was difficult, but we don’t care because they are the same points for the team. Lance makes a ‘top’ race and we have added more points than Ferrari”.
“With a normal classification we would have been in the front row, you go with the front end, you consume less tires and we do third or fourth. In Miami we were not for the podium, but we qualified in the front row and you ensure the podium. Also in Monaco . We have saved many podiums with a very good Saturdayhere we had a very bad Saturday but I am happy and calm”, sentenced Alonso.
