Carlos Sainz recognizes the superiority of Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin

“I don’t think we can be happy especially after fighting for the podium in the first part”: that’s how forceful he has been Carlos Sainz in statements to ‘Racingnews365’ analyzing what happened last weekend in Miami.

The man from Madrid started third behind ‘Checo’ Pérez and Fernando Alonsoovertook the Spaniard with a good ‘undercut’, but his compatriot returned it a few laps later with newer tyres.

“We were looking to get past Fernando, the pace was really good on the medium tyre. We were looking for a podium finish and then all of a sudden everything changed when we put the hard ones. I had to pass some traffic and had a bit of dirt on my tyres,” Sainz explains.

In fact, he points out that the great problem of Ferrari it is in the race, not in qualifying: “From there, the pace dropped enormously and we came back to reality a bitwhich is that at the moment we are not fast enough in the race, and with the long runs on harder compounds, we tend to have more problems than others“.

Without being able to fight face to face with Alonso, he is not enjoying the expected duel: “No (I am enjoying it), because I always feel that I look in the mirrors more than usual.”

“It’s true that Ferrari tends to qualify a bit better than Aston (Martin), but they are still, in racing, faster“, has added.

Lastly, he acknowledged Alonso’s superiority on Sundays: “Fernando in the race, along with Aston, are very competitive, which means they have better tire management and I often have to defend myself against him.”
