An anecdote, this time yes. In the first two races of the year, in Bahrain and in Saudi Arabia, which Fernando Alonso leading several training sessions was a sample of his options for the podium. This Friday, in Australia, it was something else.

In the second test session at the Albert Park circuit it started to rain and the Spaniard, always on point, recorded a remarkable time. from behind, Czech Prez and Carlos Sainz they were going faster, but both aborted their turns because of the traffic and the water, lots and lots of water, did the rest. Alonso was left with the best record of the session ahead of charles leclerc and max verstappen. An anecdote, this time yes.

Because in the first free practice in Australia, dry, Verstappen showed that the Red Bulls maintain their wide advantage, because the Ferraris seem more dangerous for Alonso on the Australian track and, above all, because the weather forecasts deny any possibility of rain in career.

Alonso is in an extraordinary state of form, again it was confirmed, but little else. “It has only been a 20-minute session,” warned the Aston Martin driver himself, aware of the enthusiasm that has surrounded him in recent weeks. “We still have work to do with the tires, we lack long runs… It seems that the car behaves well, but we’ll see tomorrow,” he commented in reference to this Saturday, to qualifying (07:00, DAZN).

As already happened in Arabia, with Verstappen’s mechanical problems, surprises are expected. In the first two practice sessions, even before the rain appeared, the asphalt of the Albert Park circuit was confirmed irregular, with many adhesion problems. With low temperatures -16 degrees in the environment and 24 on the asphalt- there were several track exits, such as the one carried out by Alonso himself, the one by Prez or the one by Lando Norris.

Even, to complete how eventful the day was, the commissioners of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) had to stop training for 10 minutes because the GPS system of the teams did not work and that could cause an accident.
