Just an instant before showing his euphoria in front of the microphones, Fernando Alonso received a handshake and a hug from Lance Stroll. The Canadian, sixth at the finish line, used the last reserve of his dwindling strength to congratulate the two-time world champion, a great protagonist in Sakhir. “First of all, congratulations to Lance, who underwent surgery on his wrists 12 days ago,” the Spaniard started, referring to his partner at Aston Martin.

“It’s been a great weekend. After so much work during the winter, finishing on the podium in the first race is something incredible for the team,” said Alonso. In fact, since his return to F1 in 2021, the British team had only been on the podium at the Azerbaijan GP in 2021.

“Being the second best car here is something unreal,” analyzed the Oviedo native, who only gave in to the irresistible push of the Red Bulls, but with a race pace higher than that of Mercedes and Ferrari. And that in the first lap, after a contact with Stroll, Alonso had lost the position before lewis hamilton and George Russellfalling to seventh place.

“Obviously I would have liked to start ahead to set my pace. We didn’t start in the best way, rather we had to overtake on the track, but that has given our race excitement and adrenaline,” Alonso added into the microphone of Nico Rosberg.
