Google is working on a function for your Android phone that will turn it into a dashcam that will allow you to record the traffic around you.

The use of dashcams or cameras that record from the dashboard of the car the traffic in front of the vehicle is always surrounded by controversy. It is not very clear if it is legal or not, although experts point out that it is possible to use it for recreational purposes and as long as it does not affect the handling of the car by the driver.

While is true that in Spain its use is not very widespread, this could change (and we would return to the controversy) with the announcement that Google has made recently. And it is that the technological giant has dropped that it will soon turn its Pixel phones (and possibly other compatible Android devices) into a dashcam through the Personal Safety application (Emergencies).

Discovered through a version of the app for Google’s internal purposes, this new feature has been revealed and detailed completely.

Once activated, this new feature will turn your Android device into a dashcam full-fledged, which seems very useful considering that our phones have much more technology than your average dashcam, such as cellular connectivity, GPS, a wide range of sensors, as well as video and audio recording components of high quality.

In the feature settings, users can turn audio recording on or off, enable automatic recording as soon as the phone connects to the car’s Bluetooth, and manage storage. The videos would be automatically compressed and weigh about 30 MB per minute of recording. This feature preview also indicates that videos would be automatically deleted after 3 days.

Taking into account how developed this new feature seems to be, it should not be ruled out that its launch would take place in July for Pixel phones and, subsequently, its Implementation in models running under Android.
