One in four cars does not have a DGT label and that is a problem

That the Spanish car park is very old is no secret. Currently, the average age of cars has reached 14 years And it is beginning to be worrying, since it is an upward trend for which strong solutions are not being put in place. To get used to the idea, in 2010 the age was less than 8 years. It is true that the good times have passed and that times have changed, but it is one in four cars does not even have a DGT label with the problems that this entails.

We are talking about the fact that 28.1% of all cars in Spain do not have the right to the label, so they are models of pre-2001 gasoline or pre-2006 diesel. If we take into account that there are more than 25 million registered cars in our country, that leaves us with about six million vehicles with problems to circulate and access certain areas. The reality is that the majority of vehicles are gasoline from 2006 or diesel after 2014 and carry the C label (35.9%). There are also quite a few of gasoline from between 2001 and 2006 or diesel between 2006 and 2014, carriers of the B label (31.2%).

The rate at which the registrations of vehicles with the ECO label (hybrid, LPG and CNG) or those with the ZERO label (electric and plug-in hybrids) increase, it’s still low. The former currently represent 4% of the park, while the most efficient remain at 0.8%. The solution put forward by organizations such as the OCU for the renovation of the park is clear, it is need to have more incentives to purchase. There is even the possibility of extending them to low-polluting combustion cars and second-hand vehicles.

have such old cars represents a security problem, because it does not reach the same level as in the current ones, in addition to the aforementioned contamination that worries governments so much. Although it should also be noted that the labeling system is not entirely fair or realistic. The OCU has also requested that it adapt and that focus on real emissions more than engine technology. The most notable would be the large displacement plug-in hybrids and the extended Mild Hybrid.

Also, there is an issue going on with the access to low emission zonesWell, there isn’t much information about it. They should be better marked and also provide solutions to users who move through them. For example, it is being considered that vehicles without a label are allowed to enter up to three times a year (due to emergency or ignorance), that deterrent parking spaces are built and that public transport is encouraged in these areas.
