One of the great mobility headaches is how to introduce a personal transport system in the center of large cities, beyond public transport. eye to halfgrid, a proposal by designers from a Bulgaria-based transportation design studio. These are individual capsules, just over the size of a person that move through the city through suspended cables and work with artificial intelligence.
The idea is not new, it is about transporting a person to their destination on a different level from the ground, so as not to increase the congestion of the streets. Nothing that we have not seen with subways or even cable cars: a system where the sheaths are the ones that will move along those tensioned steel cables.
This perspective is key, as it means that each capsule can be directed to different destinations, unlike a traditional cable car, where there is a single point of departure and arrival. Each capsule will be able to carry a person or a package of a certain size… and can be programmed to get where they need to go.
Riders can schedule everything through the app and choose a pickup point and destination. It’s basically like booking an Uber, except you’ll be riding in a pod on the surface. The same system can be used for deliveries of goods. The idea is that the entire system is designed to be “virtually silent”, so it will add noise pollution to that already created by road congestion.
It is not a suitable system for people with vertigo, of course, but it could be a system that could work in areas that want to be pedestrianized. The next step? Well, create a prototype, a financial partner… and a pilot city that is willing to try it.
