Marc Márquez is having a quiet winter after three seasons of ordeal. After four operations on his right arm, he seems to be at 100% and faces a new year in MotoGP… without forgetting the suffering he has experienced.
The ’93’ suffered a fall in Jerez in 2020 that marked the beginning of an odyssey for his “mentality and ambition”. After trying to return too soon, he had to have surgery again and started 2021 again with pain in his arm.
Despite the pain, Márquez was able to win three Grand Prix that season, something that not even he himself understands, as he told ‘GQ’ magazine: “Honestly, I don’t even know how I managed to win three races in 2021.“.
“I won and I started crying. What comes out to me when I win is to celebrate… but then it went the other way and it was because of the pain that I constantly suffered in my arm that I couldn’t forget,” said the ilerdense.
The pain got worse at the beginning of 2022, also with a consequent drop in his results: “There is a moment of the season that I deactivated my head. The pain changed my character, I didn’t even smile. I go to my doctors and I tell them ‘something is wrong here, because I’m going backwards. I crush myself in the gym and there is more and more pain.’ That’s when they examined me and saw that there was 34 degrees of rotation in my humerus.”
And they proposed a new operation, in the United States, which guaranteed him to recover the natural position of his humerus. Of course, a family member asked him to retire: “My grandfather was one of those in favor of leaving him. He told me that he already had enough to live on and I told him ‘grandfather, I promise you that it is the last operation, let me try because they offer me a solution’ “.
Indeed, the operation (it was the fourth) was a success. The rotation of the humerus was eliminated and only the rehabilitation kept him from returning to the slopes. However, to avoid another hasty mistake, he made it clear to the doctor that he could only allow him to train if he was already fully recovered.
“I kept looking at the doctor and told him ‘Look, I am a wild animal that you keep in a cage. When you open it I’m going to run away, so open it only when you see me ready and there’s no risk‘. I told him as is, he understood it and told me ‘well, three months quiet'”.
That’s how it was, he received authorization to compete again at the end of last season and, despite not getting more than one podium, the pain had disappeared. It meant the end of the worst period in the life of Marc Márquez. Two years of much suffering to which he has already put an end.
