“I’m much better now than in 2005 and 2006”

“I’m much better now than in 2005 and 2006”

If something was what pushed Fernando Alonso to embark on the project Aston Martin and therefore leave Alpine were the continuous references of the French brand at his age.

That of “looking at the passport” continuously to the two-time world champion of Formula 1 did not give him all the confidence he needed, and on the other hand, he is demonstrating thanks to those from Silverstone, with whom he has added four podiums in five races.

Speaking to ‘RacingNews365’, the Asturian has reflected on his age. In 2018 he said ‘see you later’ to F1… which now, five years later and close to turning 42, has helped him to be 100%.

“The dead time helped me, maybe not so much in the driving style, but I think in the mentality, in the focus and in the motivation,” he explained.

In fact, it looks better than when he won his two World Cups: “I have full batteries now, whereas in 2018 it was empty, so it helped. And then, if I compare my driving, or I try to compare myself to 2005 and 2006, I’m much better now. One hundred by one hundred”.

Alonso emphasizes differentiating F1 from sports such as football or athletics: “Age is a sure factor, but it is not what people think when they watch other sports. We are not in the 100 meter race, we are not footballers. We need our strength to drive the car fast, we need the car to perform, the experience and we need the motivation.”

For this reason, he believes that age gives him an “advantage” in the ‘Great Circus’: “At my age I continue to perform. With age, in any case, I try to think that there is an advantage, because I know more circuits, I know more conditions, I know more things”.

“Also, in the time that I didn’t win, or the time that I didn’t get on the podium, or the time that has passed since my last victory and things like that, people began to forget that, three years ago, He was World Champion at Le Mans, at Daytona or running the Dakar and finishing second in a stage against the best riders”, he has settled by vindicating himself.
