The OCU has produced a report in which it analyzes whether it is cheaper to recharge an electric car or refuel a gasoline or diesel car.

The electric car continues little by little its penetration in Spanish garages. The percentage of drivers who have a vehicle with these characteristics is still small, but the purchase of cars powered by batteries does not stop growing.

Now, apart from the classic fears of potential buyers (where to recharge, vehicle autonomy, etc.), the high energy prices have generated yet another uneasiness to those who want to bet on electric mobility.

It is still cheaper to recharge an electric car

The Volvo XC60 Plug-In Hybrid is one of the first hybrids whose battery can be recharged on the grid.

Thus, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has decided to prepare a report in which it analyzes what is cheaper: recharging an electric car or refueling a combustion car.

This association has compared how much was paid to recharge the electric car (data from the end of the year 2022) and what it cost two years ago, before the rise in energy prices began. In addition, this price has been compared with what it means to fill the tank of a combustion vehicle, both gasoline and diesel.

As you can imagine, the electric option, for now, is still the most beneficial: recharging an electric car costs half as much as refueling a combustion car. Of course, the OCU points out that the cost of using 10,000 km of an electric vehicle has tripled between 2020 and 2022.

The OCU has taken as a reference the cost for a driver who travels around 10,000 km/year with a mid-range vehicle applying the electricity rates of 2020 and those of November 2022 in off-peak hours and with the PVPC regulated rate (about 2,000 kWh of electricity).

These are the cheapest hours to recharge your electric car

For gasoline cars, a average consumption of 7 liters per 100, kmwhich means 700 liters for 10,000 km, while for diesel cars an average consumption of 6 liters/100 km (600 liters for 10,000 km) has been estimated.

In this way, according to the calculations of the OCU, the drivers of an electric car they will spend 580 euros on electricity if they travel 10,000 kmwhile 1,118 will be paid by those who drive a gasoline vehicle and 1,007 by a diesel vehicle, almost more than double.
