Background
In the last days of 2022 we were able to meet and drive the 2023 model of al MG ZS a vehicle we have known since the end of 2021 and that we were able to prove since its arrival in Mexico.
It is prudent to comment that the ZS model is the one that has given MG the greatest penetration, since until recently its marketing represented 30% of the brand’s sales since its launch in our country in the last quarter of 2020.
2021 vs 2023 What changed?
The 2023 model has some updates and mechanical additions that are worth discussing item by item and we will explain it to you throughout the text.
MG ZS 2023 on test: Design
The exterior design is practically the same, but we find some wise modifications, such as the new design of the fascias -front and rear- the grille is also different in finishes, but not in shapes. we found LEDS in all the lighting both in the front and in the back.- A detail that I did not love was the use of simulated exhaust outlets in the back. The exterior set is completed with 17-inch alloy wheels.

In the mechanical section we also find changes in relation to the 2021 model, and the most important is the incorporation of a CVT box which replaces the four-change automatic with which it began to be marketed in Mexico.
One piece of information that must be noted is that the engine works with the Atkinson Cycle, which is similar to Otto’s four-stroke, but manages the 4th valve overlap in a different way. cycle (exhaust) in favor of low consumption and better fuel efficiency.
The suspension scheme is the same as we already know: McPherson strut front and rigid axle rear, which, although not ideal, works adequately in a vehicle with these dimensions and weight.

Here we also find radical changes compared to the previous model, the dashboard and upholstery are different.
The design of the upholstery also changed, and now the seats have some soft appliqués that resemble the weave of natural carbon fiber, there are red stitching all around, in the upholstery, on the dashboard, on the boot of the lever and that detail is appreciated. We have a huge panoramic awning. The second row of seats is very wide and comfortable and although we need some amenities such as the central armrest, the spaciousness and available space are worth mentioning, and since we are talking about space, let’s pay a little attention to the trunk that it offers us. a volume of 448 liters of capacity with the functional second row, and if we lower the backrests (40/60%), that area increases to more than triple, that is to say we have 1,378 liters of capacity.

The board changed, now instead of finding traditional needle instruments, there is a 7” TFT screen and a 10.1” touch screen for the control of the infotainment system and some other functions of the vehicle, such as the adjustment of the climate control.
Compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is complete, since several apps from our phone are displayed on the central screen, lease, Waze, Spotify, WhatsApp

Behind the wheel of the ZS I realize that the performance is adequate, the soundproofing is good and the ride quality is good -if the road is in good condition-
We understand that the vocation and The benefits of the ZS do not have any aspiration focused on sports and the reactions when accelerating with the CVT will be constant but not forceful, well, I am not trying to say that it drives slow, it complies and complies very well, but if the idea is to start and accelerate quickly, the MG ZS is not the right vehicle.
It’s comfortable, spacious, well-appointed and the design is nice, the facelifted additions make it a bit more refined and it looks good.
Conclution
A product that is worth considering if what you are looking for is a small SUV, with a good appearance, roomy for passengers and if performance takes second place, it is a great purchase under $500 thousand pesos (MXN).
A very well equipped vehicle and with a security suite well above what the authorities require make it a coherent product for family transport
