one of the most exclusive in 75 years of history

They’re celebrating 75 years since the foundation from Porsche, which is one of the most renowned manufacturers for its tradition in the creation of sports models. Throughout this time they have made truly exclusive and valuable examples, including the record held Porsche 917K which was auctioned for more than 14 million dollars. Although today we come to remember another who is relatively unknown, but who is really special. Its about Porsche America Roadstera convertible with a certain American accent.

Only 16 units were made of this model, which has as its starting point the mythical Porsche 356, which was the first in series created by the company. What was special about these copies is that they sought the minimum weight that could be achieved in the convertible. That’s why they resorted to a lightweight aluminum body with a number of improvements that came from the Speedster. With him I shared the bucket seats, the waterproof cover or the shape of the windows.

The result was a weight 160 kg below than the 356 Coupé had, an achievement for the time. The same happened with its benefits, since it managed to reach 180 km/h thanks to its 70 CV four-cylinder boxer engine, something surprising for the year 1952. The fact is that this Porsche America Roadster, as its name says, only made it to the US market. It was thanks to the insistence of the popular importer, Max Hoffmann, who was the one who believed that he had a place in that market for a Porsche with these characteristics.

He was joined in the campaign for this vehicle by racer and dealer, John von Neumann. In fact, one of 16 Porsche America Roadsters was raced with his stepson, Josie von Neumann, behind the wheel. He achieved some victories and showed the potential. The other 15 also gave much to talk about at the time and the Stuttgart brand finally chose to bring more versions of the 356 to the United States, such as the popular 1500 Speedster that became an icon being the mount of James Dean.

Currently, this specimen is really valued by collectors due to its level of exclusivity. It is believed that only 11 are preserved of the 16 units built and its price can exceed seven figures. Those in better condition are valued at up to $4 million.
