Registrations are still far from pre-pandemic figures

In the first month of 2023, just over 64,000 new passenger cars were sold, 51.4% more than in January of last year but 26% less than in January 2020.

The employers’ association Anfac enlightens us for another month with the data of registrations for the first month of 2023, which left a total of 64,147 units sold. This translates into 51.4% more than in January of last year, but the figures are still far from close to those we registered just before the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, this significant increase compared to a year ago is largely due to two factors: first, the fact that the market volume in 2022 was at very low levels due to the microchip crisis and the bottlenecks in transport; and the second, because many of these units correspond to vehicles marketed in December and registered in January.

All three channels experience high growth, especially the one of rent a car who was the most punished in 2022: reaches 4,145 registrations, 157.5% more. Of course, this data is close to 70% lower than that obtained in January 2019. For its part, sales to individuals stand at 32,040 units (48.6% more) and those of companies, at 27,962. units (45.6% more.) Similarly, if we compare both channels with the figures from before the pandemic, the decline is noticeable (around 20 and 15%, respectively.)

The average emissions from new cars does continue to decline progressively. Last month he noticed the 118.3g CO2/kmmore than 0.1% less.

“We started the year with an increase in sales of over 50%. It is good information, but it must be seen in perspective: the effects of the pandemic and Filomena in the months of January of previous years distort the reality of the vehicle market in Spain. The relevant fact is that we are still 26% below the figures for January 2020 when we were not yet aware of the Covid-19. This 2023 will be a key year for the recovery of the automotive sector”, declares Félix García, director of Communication of Anfac.
