Repairing anti-shock technologies is problematic for consumers, especially after repair.

Technology to avoid crashes in cars has played and continues to play an important role in improving vehicle safety, helping to reduce accidents and deaths on the road. However, a recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the United States shows that these systems have also proven problematic for consumers, especially after repair.

In its report, this body surveyed more than 3,000 owners of vehicles equipped with collision avoidance technology (for example, blind spot monitor, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking and rear view cameras). Approximately half of those who declared having repaired any of these systems they had problems with the technologies after the repair was finished.

Most would repeat the purchase of these systems

“Most of the more than 3,000 owners we contacted said they had never needed to repair their collision avoidance systems, but for the minority of owners who did, the problems were not always easily resolved,” he said. explained Alexandra Mueller, survey manager and IIHS research scientist. “Many had problems with the technology afterwards, and some pointed out that they had to fix the same function more than once. Despite this, the vast majority said they would buy a vehicle equipped with the technology again.

The number of new vehicles equipped with these types of safety devices is increasing and is expected to increase rapidly in the coming years. The devices themselves also resist the effects of shock forces, but IIHS analysis suggests that most problems stem from the repair process itself, not from the crash itself.

Anti-collision systems often require calibration of sensors and cameras, which can be expensive and complicate the repair. According to the IIHS, while a typical windshield replacement can cost as little as $250, a separate study from the Highway Loss Data Institute found that the same repair for a vehicle equipped with frontal collision avoidance technology was more likely of having claims of more than 1,000 dollars due to the calibration of the system components (938 euros).
