Why did Ford register the name Model T in Mexico?

The Industrial Property Institute of Mexico received a registration application from the Ford Motor Company for the name “Model T”, with the description of “motor land vehicles, namely passenger cars, structural components for land vehicles, motors for vehicles, accessories for the aforesaid goods consisting of covers for vehicles and tailored covers for automobile seats, luggage racks for vehicles , insect screens as structural components of vehicles, fenders for motor vehicles and couplings to receive trailer hitches for vehicles”.

This leaves a spectrum of things that go far beyond a simple car model, suggesting that perhaps this name could be used for a line of accessories.versions, or yes, even a model with that name.

Background

In 2016 Ford filed the Model T trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, an action that until now has not led to any type of use for any vehicle. But now, in this new brand presentation in Mexico, the description of the types of use is -as we have already seen- much broader than just “automobiles” as it was in the US.

Another possibility is that Ford simply wants to keep the Model T trademark in case another company can use it. It is worth remembering that Tesla names its models in a similar way, having in its catalog vehicles such as Model S, Model X and Model Y, so maybe it was a matter of time before conflicts began to exist and what Ford did was to prevent them.

Ford built 15 million Model Ts between 1908 and 1927. Remembered for being the first series production car and one of the first to offer a windshield, since in 1908 Ford began to offer the windshield as an option on the Model T in a package that also included a speedometer and headlights.

The Model T was initially manufactured in the United States, to later be assembled at plants in Denmark, Germany, Mexico, Ireland, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

If you still have doubts, also You can see this note where we tell you why Ford decided at the time to name its iconic vehicle as Model T.
