It is already nine years of Formula E, which we have gladly had in Mexico from the beginning. This year is special because CUPRA, the sports car brand of Spanish origin, makes an important announcement.
What happens?
The ABT CUPRA team makes its debut today, in the first race of the ninth season of the FIA Formula E Championship, in Mexico City.
The Drivers Robin Frijns and Nico Müller will take the wheel of the Gen3the electric racing single-seater, on the 2,628-kilometer circuit of the Hermanos Rodríguez Autodrome.
Pre-season testing with the Gen3 car, which is significantly different from its Gen2 predecessor, was very positive and the experience gained in this short period of time was extensive. This, together with the knowledge of all the members of the ABT CUPRA team (ABT is the most successful team in the championship, with 47 podium finishes achieved in seven years), increases the excitement ahead of the first race of the season in Mexico City.
CUPRA drivers bring a wealth of experience. 31-year-old Dutchman Robin Frijns has participated in six Formula E seasons and achieved two race victories. Nico Müller, for his part, has been involved in the electric single-seater championship since the 2017-18 season, initially as a reserve, test and development driver, and later as the main driver. The 30-year-old Swiss now returns to Formula E after his last race, which was at the Monaco E-Prix in season 7.

Robin Frijns commented: “We had little time to get to know the car during pre-season, so the opening race in Mexico will undoubtedly be a great challenge for our team. We will have to go step by step. But if we don’t make any mistakes and the car works well, we’ll be in a position to fight for points.”
Nico Müller added: “Mexico is the perfect place for the season opener. The atmosphere there is unique, especially in the stadium area, where you can hear the fans even inside the vehicle. Seeing how Mexicans live and share their passion for motorsports provides an extra dose of motivation”.
CUPRA CEO, Wayne Griffiths, and members of the CUPRA board of directorswill host the event and receive one hundred guests, including international media and distributors.
The CUPRA UrbanRebel Racing prototype will be on display in the racetrack’s Fan Village.
The first race of season 9 of Formula E will be held over 36 laps at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The test will start today at 2:00 p.m. in Mexico City.
