On several occasions we have talked about the conversion of combustion cars to electric to give a second life to the classics or simply to be able to use them now that the restrictions are imposed in the big cities. It is a solution that today is implemented in a very residual way, but that has a lot of potential taking into account the ban on combustion vehicles by 2035 in Europe. So much so, that this question has reached the Congress of Deputies to see how it could be addressed in the years to come.
It has been the PP that has proposed allocate part of the European funds to that transformation from combustion to electric cars. That money is the same that comes from the Recovery Plan that has made PERTE and other projects within the field of mobility possible. The fact is that the transformation of the sector is being complex and that is why they want to include these transformations. In fact, they would include it within a specific line of the PERTE that would allow simplify and reduce the cost of conversion processes to electric from conventional cars.
The PP asks that within a period of six months the Government adopt the necessary measures to “expedite the procedures for conversion of combustion engines to other green ones.” They also believe it is necessary to make a more efficient certification and approval system. In short, what bureaucratic barriers are reduced for this procedure and also the processing costs, without giving up security. It is something that has already been done in other countries such as France with quite positive results to date.
However, also feasibility is considered From this project. In many cases, the cost of converting to electric would still be high, it would not be worth it. In the case of the classics, which do a few kilometers, due to emissions, the conversion to electric would hardly be justified. Not to mention that many cars are not prepared for the increase in weight that the installation of the battery and the Safety could be compromised in the event of an accident. In any case, an interesting possibility that has a lot of potential if it is given a chance at a political level and the current conditions for carrying it out improve.
