the electric futurist without big batteries

NanoFlowCell is a firm of Swiss origin that has spent many years developing technologies of different types. His specialty is flow cell batteries and in 2015 they announced that they had managed to reduce its size in order to adapt it to a vehicle. This is how the first NanoFlowCell Quantino was born, a prototype that surprised with its performance and autonomy figures. However, seven years have passed and they still have not put their cars on the market. Now present the NanoFlowCell Quantino twentyfive in order for that to happen.

It’s about a four-seater roadster (2+2) that serves as a celebration of the company’s 25th anniversary and with which they also announce their expansion to the United States. There they will put some facilities to be able to produce this unique electric vehicle soon. What makes the Quantino special is that it doesn’t has a large battery pack like most current electrics. This means that their weight is not compromised or that they need more space to house them.

Instead, it uses a technology known as bi-ION, something unprecedented in the industry. What they do in facing a positively charged electrolyte and a negatively charged anolyte on an ion selective membrane to generate electricity. Therefore it is an electric car without a plug, it does not charge like the rest. Instead, use a liquid bi-ION electrolytic fuel that goes in two tanks of 125 liters. It is an aqueous solution free of toxic substances, non-flammable and sustainable.

With that load, it offers a autonomy of up to 2,000 kilometers, something that conventional electrics cannot achieve. The NanoFlowCell Quantino twentyfive has a 48V system that supplies power to four low voltage electric motors, which are located one on each wheel. Thus it achieves all-wheel drive and a combined power of 321 hp (236 kW). As it maintains a contained weight and dimensions, this convertible accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds.

The NanoFlowCell Quantino twentyfive is still in the conceptual phase and there are many unknowns around it. The first would be the fact of refueling that bi-ION electrolytic fuel, which seems even more difficult to find than hydrogen. It would be necessary construction of an infrastructure important, something that is already costing even with charging points for electric cars. In any case, we will have to see how NanoFlowCell and its futuristic technology evolve.
