In 2016, Toyota surprised the markets by launching the C-HR electrified crossover, a model designed and developed for Europe, which will rival the successful Nissan Juke and Honda HR-V.
The C-HR was in need of an update and Toyota announced it late last year with the C-HR Prologue concept; but now we have the second generation, a model that will once again be focused on Europe, where it will begin sales at the end of this year.
Toyota says it took the success of the original Toyota C-HR as its starting point (700,000 units sold in Europe), but it is a step further in design, engines, equipment and safety. It is worth saying that again it will be exclusively a hybrid model.
Toyota C-HR: What’s New
The new Toyota C-HR is almost “copied” to the C-HR Prologue, with a very sporty silhouette and much emphasis on aerodynamic efficiency, where its very marked character lines and diamond pattern that runs along the sides of the car stand out.
The new C-HR debuts an aggressive front end, with torn LED headlights based on the bZ4X, very short overhangs and oversized wheels. It stands out for its two-tone body, but not only on the roof, but on the rear panels and on the complete rear. In this area, the lighting across the width of the vehicle stands out, and some very striking details, like the name of the models and illuminates the opening or closing of the doors. There’s also a welcome light sequence as the driver approaches the car.
Regarding dimensions, is slightly shorter than its predecessor:

New Toyota C-HR: New generation interior
Inside doors there is a renewed design, an appreciable improvement in the quality of materials and, above all, more space in the rear seats, perhaps if the black point of the previous C-HR. And in this case, again the light is the protagonist of the car with an offer of 64 different colors to customize the ambient lighting. In any case, Toyota has developed a system by which it automatically varies depending on the time of day.
The integrated, intuitive and personalized user experience is highlighted in the interior design and technology of the new C-HR. Keyless (or phone) access not only activates the light sequence describedbut also automatically applies driver preferences for seating position, digital instrument cluster, head-up display, and multimedia display.
In technology there is a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with updated graphics. Also available is the Toyota Smart Connect multimedia system, which includes an 8.0 or 12.3-inch touchscreen, virtual assistant, and wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Large adjustable and heated seats, a large panoramic roof, a 10-inch head-up display and JBL audio, as well as the latest software for ADAS assists, are part of the optional package.
Toyota C-HR: the mechanics
The new C-HR will be 100% electric, with three conventional hybrid (HEV) options and a new plug-in hybrid.
The hybrid mechanics are the 140H and 200H models, the latter with simple or all-wheel drive. The first uses a 1.8-liter Atkinson cycle engine. and generates 140 Hp, the other two are associated with a 2.0-liter engine and offer 200 Hp. As a novelty will be the plug-in hybrid called 220PH, which is coupled to the 2.0-liter engine to offer 220 Hp.
The C-HR uses the fifth generation of Toyota’s Electric Hybrid technology, with a complete redesign of the main components of the hybrid system to reduce size and weight, including a more powerful high-voltage battery with 13.8 kWh capacity.
A premiere of the model is the system called “geofencing”, thanks to which the Toyota C-HR 220PH will automatically switch to electric mode when the vehicle enters a low emission zone. It is worth saying that the autonomy in 100% electric mode is 66 kilometers.
The C-HR 2024 will be available with GR Sport and Premiere Edition versions, which looks more luxurious. The former will feature GR design cues such as 20-inch alloy wheels, GR badge on the tailgate, “Liquid Black” garnish on the center console and sporty front seats with the GR logo embossed on the front headrests. Premiere Edition features perforated leather seats with Sulfur contrast stitchingas well as extensive equipment.
