Fernando Alonso has given a few words to the Dutch newspaper ‘De Telegraf’. The Asturian driver, double Formula 1 world champion, took the opportunity to praise Max Verstappen and to throw a not at all subtle dart at Lewis Hamilton in the comparison between Red Bull and Mercedes.
Because for the Spaniard, currently at Alpine and soon at Aston Martin, what ‘Mad Max’ has achieved has much more value than what Lewis has done with the star car.
“Verstappen’s titles they have more value than those of Hamilton”, exposed the Spaniard.
And he explains: “I respect Lewis, but it’s different when you win World Cups when you’ve only fought with your teammate.”
“I think that a World Cup like this has less value than others when you fight against drivers from different teams, with a better car in some cases,” he says.
“In 2005 and 2006 others had better cars…”
Alonso explains it from his own experience: “In 2005 and 2006 I started well and built my advantage. Others had better cars, but I managed it.”
“Max never fought for runs against Albon or Perez, and I didn’t do it with Fisichella either to win the title,” he says.
“Schumacher won five World Cups against Barrichello”
Alonso also talks about Schumacher: “Michael fought with his teammate to be champion for five years. Hamilton, with Rosberg and with Bottas. Is different”.
Fernando, in that sense, values Verstappen: “Last season was different; in this one he has won title well in advance. He’s very domineering.”
