What’s happening?


Volkswagen celebrates 50 years of exporting cars to the United States.


It is important to note that Volkswagen had already begun to export spare parts to the US since 1968, but it was not until 1973 when it shipped produced cars for the first time.


Volkswagen de México: Achievements in the US


  • 30 thousand units of the Frisar model were shipped in the first export, in 1973.
  • Models such as the Jetta, Golf and New Beetle reflect the high quality manufacturing of the Puebla plant in that country as well as in the world.
  • In May 1993, the train shipment to the United States of the Jetta and Golf models began.


The New Beetle entered the US market in 1998. From that year to 2010, 1.2 million units were soldwhile from 2011 to 2019, the year in which its production ended, more than half a million units were assembled.



The Tiguan and Taos models, made in Mexico, are also sold in the US market, the first since the summer of 2017 and the second since June 2021.


During the first quarter of 2023, the 37,764 units delivered to customers of the models produced at the Puebla plant: Tiguan, Taos and Jetta represented 55.6% of total Volkswagen sales in the United States.which added a total of 67,853 vehicles.


As you can see Volkswagen de México is an important manufacturing center for North America. Both for the quality of manufacturing and for the geographical location.
