What if the cameras could detect cars that have not passed the ITV?

There has always been a certain problem with ITV in Spain. There is quite a percentage to take into account vehicles that have not passed the technical inspection and that they are circulating daily, despite posing a risk in terms of road safety. Until now it is not easy to detect it, unless the authorities stop and check the data of the car. However, now a more updated and precise option is being considered. You could see the cars without ITV through traffic cameras.

Starting this year, municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants have to Activate your Low Emission Zone (ZBE), something that is already present in large cities such as Madrid and Barcelona. It serves to limit the entry of the most polluting vehicles and is done through a series of cameras that controls the entry to the delimited area. Cars without an environmental label already they’ve been getting fines for accessing unauthorized areas and they go with images from those cameras. In the future, those who do not have a valid ITV could also receive them.

Because the Association of Entities for the Technical Inspection of Vehicles of the Community of Madrid (AEMA-ITV) has requested to be able to use those cameras that identify the environmental badge of the vehicles to detect those that have not passed the ITV. It would be the ideal way to control this aspect and they also allude to the fact that having the inspection up to date is necessary to “ensure good air quality” in cities. At the moment it has only been requested in the Community of Madridbut it remains to be seen if they succeed and if more autonomous communities end up joining.

In November 2022, the Madrid stations detected nothing less than 16,631 vehicles with serious defects due to the high emissions of polluting gases. To this we must add an absenteeism rate of almost 40% in these periodic reviews. The use of ZBE cameras would be a solution to force all cars to be up to date with the ITV and its application would be relatively easy. At the end of the day, the cameras read the car’s license plate and compare the data of its environmental badge, only that of the ITV in force would have to be added.
