The DGT is in the middle of a special surveillance campaign until next Sunday, in which they will check that the vehicles maintain their optimal conditions for circulation.

Traffic has spent the whole week checking that the car in which you are moving meets all security requirements, and will continue to do so in a particularly incisive way until next Sunday. With this new surveillance campaign, the DGT intends to value the importance that road safety offers to the vehicles themselves.

Take a look at some tips on road safety

Undoubtedly, as the statement from the body under the Ministry of the Interior narrates, the age of the vehicle is related to its level of safety and the risk of death or being injured increases with the age of each model. “Specifically, the risk of being killed or seriously injured multiply by two when comparing the accidents that occurred with vehicles that are 10 to 15 years old, in relation to vehicles that are less than 5 years old”, they emphasize.

Bearing in mind that the average age of the passenger cars that make up 70% of our car fleet over 11 years old, is something that users should pay special attention to. An essential aspect in this regard is to wear a correct car maintenance with frequent visits to the workshop, which will help us avoid costly and dangerous breakdowns.

How to maintain our car

What should we check in our car

  • Address: if you notice clearances, noises, vibrations, abnormal hardness when turning or irregular tire wear.
  • Brakes: pads/shoes, discs and brake fluid level.
  • Suspension: the stability of the car and its braking capacity depend on it.
  • tires: tread depth (1.6 mm minimum), deformations, irregular wear and pressure (remember that you must measure it when cold.)
  • Lights: both turn signals and dipped and high beam lights must be in perfect condition and well regulated. It is not only important to see, but also to be seen.
  • Battery: if there are problems when starting or you see the terminals leaking.
  • levels and filters: brake fluid level, windscreen wiper, oil, belt tension and condition of oil, air and pollen filters.
  • Air-conditioning: If it cools little or noises are heard when connecting it, have it checked. It is an element that can reduce fatigue.
  • Windows and wipers: check that the windshield is not damaged (it is a fundamental component in the structural resistance of the vehicle.)
  • Injection: in the event of increases in consumption, jerks when starting or running, check the injection system (or the carburetion in older cars.)
