Fernando Alonso is ‘showing his face’ for Aston Martin at the start of 2023. He has achieved the team’s four podiums and his difference with Lance Stroll it is immense. He has 75 points and occupies the third position in the world championship behind Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez.
And the big question is if and when Aston Martin will catch up with Red Bull. Lawrence Stroll, the team owner, is primarily the one who asks these questions. He is not satisfied with the podiums. He wants victories. And he wants them now.
Dan Fallows has answered these questions. In statements collected by ‘Motorsport’, he lamented how far Red Bull is: “We have to take into account where we are in relation to Red Bull. I think there are areas where we think we’re relatively strong.”
“We have to optimize our car for each particular circuit, which means that sometimes there can be low-speed aspects, high-speed corners, in which we are not as strong as some other rivals,” explained the Aston Martin guru. .
He says that they are still working on the initial concept of the car. So the improvements are yet to come: “Red Bull as a concept has been evolving a little more than ours. Obviously, early last year we publicly switched to a different concept. We are still developing it… there’s a little left.”
“I think we’ve managed to generate a car that is reasonably capable in a lot of different areas. We can tune it to what we think is optimal for each circuit. There are areas that we focus on from an aerodynamic and mechanical point of view that we think we can make progress. But honestly, I do not see it like a car that has significant weaknesses at the moment,” he said.
