Will we see fast chargers every 60 km in Spain? It is the EU target for 2026

Will we see fast chargers every 60 km in Spain? It is the EU target for 2026

If we make a classification by country that refers to the development of the charging infrastructure, it is clear that Spain would be in the low places. Despite being one of the largest car producers and also one of the largest in size, our country has as a pending issue the number of public chargers. That is, in part, the reason that electric sales have not finished curdling. Now comes the goal of having fast chargers every 60 kilometers road in the medium term.

You want to have that growth in infrastructure ready by the year 2026, so it’s a pretty optimistic target. By that date, a total of 400 kW would be offered at these charging stations, which would increase to 600 kW by 2028. It is not something that is imposed at the national level, it is a measure that comes from the Council and the European Parliament, which have reached a provisional agreement. An approval by the co-legislators is still needed, but it seems likely that this will happen to meet European objectives.

The European Union aims to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions at least 55% by 2030 and that happens to increase the sales of electric cars. A lot of effort is going to be put into making electric car owners well covered with these chargers. Emphasis will also be placed on heavy transport, as there will be a charging station every 120 kilometers for trucks and buses. In this case, there is talk that they will be on the main European highways by 2028 and offer powers of between 1,400 and 2,800 kW.

The European agreement not only affects electric cars, it also wants to focus in hydrogen cars. This technology is going to be further developed and to provide support a network of hydrogen generators is planned, with refueling points for this fuel every 200 kilometers by the year 2031. In all cases, emphasis has been placed on the transparency in prices and also in common payment. This means that anyone can pay with their credit card, in addition to offering all the information on these points by electronic means.
